Apple Picking and Bottling
Shirley Golf Course Apple Juice
This year has been a bumper year for fruits and nuts country wide and Shirley Golf Course is blessed with a huge number of apple trees throughout the course. The trees were absolutely laden with apples of all varieties. It seemed a shame to leave them for the scavenging geese so a small group of golfers went onto the course with apple pickers and filled buckets and boxes. The apples were then taken to Clive’s Fruit Farm in Upton on Severn where they were pressed, pasteurised and bottled. A few hours of picking from our members yielded 144 bottles of juice. The profits from the sale of the apple juice will be used to support the efforts of the sustainability group.
A few additional points for information
Bottles will be sold at club events for £5 each or 3 for £13. If we sell all the bottles then we will make a couple of hundred pounds.
The yield from the apples surprised us and if the sale of juice is successful, we think that we could increase the amount we pick. We would like to involve more golfers next time
The feedback on the juice itself has been overwhelmingly positive: it’s sweet, refreshing with a clean taste.
