England Golf’s Sustainability Drive 2025–2030
What Does It Mean for You and Your Golf Club?
The newly-published England Golf ‘Sustainability Drive 2025-2030’ plan marks a significant step forward in what the organisation is calling on golf clubs, and golfers themselves, to do about sustainability and the environment.
So, what are they asking? And how do you, and your golf club, measure up?
Are you prepared, and is your golf club prepared, to take the actions involved?
What Does E.G. Want from Golf Clubs?
It’s a formidable list. Although many clubs will have started down this road, for the majority, in our experience, the requests being made are a real eye-opener.
The plan is asking for a whole club approach. For example…
- Creating an ACTION PLAN for sustainability (with accompanying budgets)
- Putting SUSTAINABILTY on the agenda of board or directors’ meetings
Delving down, the plan addresses the three key areas of WATER, ENERGY, and NATURE.
Here’s an example of an action suggested from each of these areas:
- WATER: doing an AUDIT and beginning to plan for the club’s water resilience
- ENERGY: again, doing a proper audit, and looking into on-site energy generation
- NATURE: working in collaboration with local nature and wildlife groups
What Does E.G. Want from Individual Golfers?
This is a really interesting list of suggestions. It is asking nothing less than a huge shift in the way golfers think about their attitudes and behaviours, and the contributions they make. Some of it does seem ambitious, to say the least (e.g. try to use public transport), but perhaps now is the time for ambition? If not now, when?
As with the clubs, the actions requested relate to WATER, ENERGY AND NATURE. And England Golf is asking members to hold their clubs to account.
