Badger Deterrents

A Case Study from Ullesthope Court Golf Club

As with many clubs, Ullesthorpe Court GC has experienced much badger damage in the last few years, particularly on and around our greens.  A couple of methods were attempted, using sprays and smells, but with no success.

The next method, introduced by Shaun Corby, Head Greenkeeper, and starting in Spring 2022, was to install solar-powered lights.

Two or three lights have been placed around each green, depending on the size of the green. As you can see, the deterrents are very small, just a few inches square and mounted on a piece of wood, approximately 18 inches long.  The lights are placed in the semi-cut, so as not to interfere with playing.

So far, the deterrents have been successful.  Although this has not solved the problem of badgers, we feel it’s reducing activity and

pushing them away from the more important fine turf areas such as greens and aprons.

One of the beauties of this method, is that it is eco-friendly, easy to install and relatively cheap.

These particular solar lights can be obtained online – search ” iPosible 150 LED solar lights”. Cost at time of writing is approx £30 for a pack of 6.
